7.1. A portion of “Cancer Alley,” the eighty-five-mile corridor of refineries and petrochemical plants between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The state has seventeen mega-refineries and more than 180 petrochemical factories. ©2011 Julie Dermansky.

Residents of Cancer Alley have attempted to sue the industries they believe are responsible for their poor health. Unfortunately, legal standards make it difficult to pinpoint which, if any, of the facilities is to blame for the excessive rates of cancer in the area. Residents have also organized to attempt to limit the siting of new noxious facilities in their neighborhoods. But, since the local governments in Louisiana traditionally support the needs of industry, so far the residents have had little hope of redress.
